Prof. Herbert De Gersem

The main expertise of the research group of Prof. De Gersem concerns electromagnetic field simulation, as used in the design procedure for electronic and electrotechnical devices. Research related to the Graduate School of Computational Engineering aims at developing new and powerful algorithms for electromagnetic field simulation and thereby extending the currently available tools towards a broader application range. This research is motivated and triggered by contemporary demands from electrical engineering. Numerical techniques for electromagnetic field simulation are studied concerning their reliability, accuracy, stability and efficiency. Typical applications are accelerator components, resonators, magnet systems, electrical actuators, printed circuit boards, transformers, filters, antennas, radar systems and bio-electromagnetic problems. Typical simulations aim at shaping electromagnetic fields, reducing losses, diminishing electromagnetic compatibility problems and increasing the efficiency and reliability of existing and new designs. A recent research component deals with nonlinear ultrasonic wave propagation.
