Exploitation of Structure and Parallelism in ADOL-C

For numerous applications the exploitation of structure and/or parallelism  is indispensable for the efficient computation of derivatives and also for the design of new solution approaches. We discuss  recent developments integrated in the software package ADOL-C for the algorithmic differentiation of C and C++ codes to utilize such additional information of the function to be

differentiated. One aspect is the detection of nondifferentiabilities to build from that an adapted optimizer for nonsmooth problems. Another aspect is the differentiation of already parallelized code. Numerical examples illustrate the benefits resulting from such structure exploitation with respect to  an extended applicability but also concerning computing time.
