Automation of Industrial Design Processes by Using Optimization and Process Integration

In industrial product development, design decisions are mostly based on intensive parameter studies combined with expert knowledge, where in case of complex technical systems like aero engines typically several experts from different departments have to be involved. However, typically each department uses its own analysis programs with its own data standard resulting in time-consuming data transfer, and even if each discipline finds its individual optimum, the overall design may not exploit the full optimization potential. Meanwhile availability of high computer power allows to integrate such design tasks in overall optimization processes where key drivers are optimization-oriented design parameterization, expert-driven problem formulation and use of multi-criterion optimization concepts to rise acceptance in industry, and use of response surfaces to account for high analysis effort. Various examples from aero engine design will demonstrate applicability and remaining challenges of such an approach.
