Many engineering problems such as chemical reaction processes, population dynamics, ground water contamination are governed by coupled diffusionconvectionreaction partial differential equations (PDEs) with nonlinear source or sink terms. Nonlinear transport systems are typically convection and/or reaction dominated with characteristic solutions possessing sharp layers. Discontinuous Galerkin methods produce stable solutions to overcome the spurious oscillations for convection dominated problems. In this talk we present the application of adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods to convection dominated models containing quadratic and Monod type reaction terms. Numerical results for single and coupled systems arising in several applications demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the adaptive DGFEM.
