TU CE GSC CE People at the Graduate School CE Principal Investigators Cameron Tropea - Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics

The foundations of this research group have been built equally on theoretical, experimental and numerical analysis of flow problems. The particular fields of basic research include the hydrodynamics of interfacial phenomena, external and internal aerodynamics, and multiphase flows. Fundamental contributions have been made to modern experimental methods to investigate complex flow fields, in particular to the measurement techniques Particle Image Velocimetry and Phase Doppler Interferometry, both of which are indispensable for the validation of numerical predictions of single phase and dispersed phase flows respectively. In the development and analysis of these techniques, a high degree of simulation is necessary, in particular scattering of a shaped light beam (laser) from small particles. Noteworthy developments have been made in the areas of computational fluid dynamics, many of which are in the framework of a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) formulation, but more recently also involving Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and its hybrid use with the RANS approach. Here the emphasis is placed on the development of turbulence models, especially near-wall models, which capture the essential physics and allow flows of engineering significance to be simulated. While experiments are widely used to help develop and validate these models, Direct Numerical Simulations are invaluable for detailed analysis of turbulence phenomena in selected configurations.
